Posted on Aug 10 2012 - 6:34pm by Christopher

As we know from our blogging experience, we realise that WordPress is the best blogging platform and there is no doubt in it. Some of the well known websites such as CNN, Yahoo trust WordPress and their sites are powered by WordPress. Plugins are the things that add functionality to your WordPress blog. These plugins are chosen based on the need, functionality and the likes of the user. However, there are a set of plugins that any WordPress blog must have for the better functioning of the blog.

Here is my own list of plugins I recommend for using it with your WordPress blog.

Must have Plugins for WordPress

#1 Akismet

The first enemy of any website or a blog is Spam. A powerful tool to scrub the issue of spam is necessary in the fight against spam users and comments. Akismet checks the comments and track backs for your site and checks with the Akismet web service and mark it as spam or not. It is more accurate than any other system in spam fighting.

However for websites that uses Disqus comment system do not need this plugin as a Disqus has its own spam fighting mechanism.

#2 Conditional Captcha for WordPress

It is another spam fighting tool but it requires Akismet or Anti-spam Typepad to run. If the IP or e-mail is blacklisted as spammer in Akismet and for those people this plugin shows a CAPTCHA. If the user passes the CAPTCHA the comment is held for moderation or else it can be discarded or sent to trash automatically.

#3 DoFollow

As we are aware that a back link with ‘nofollow’ attribute is not considered for site ranking by various metrics like PageRank and Alexa ranking, we require this plugin to remove the ‘nofollow’ attribute in the comments of the sites for the links the commentator gives. ‘DoFollow’ blogs generally attracts a lot of visitors as more people are after worthy ‘DoFollow‘ back links.

#4 Clean Contact

Clean Contact is the easy way to add contact forms to your blog. With short codes you can insert contact form anywhere you like to and also we can customize the forms as we like. The special thing about this plugin is Clean Contact forms hide itself from Spam Bots and filters messages using Akismet. So you won’t be needing CAPTCHA or skill testing questions to protect from Spam.

#5 All in One SEO Pack

SEO is the important aspect for any blog. There is no compromise in that. All in One SEO pack provides the best class SEO settings for the blog. It completely optimizes your WordPress blog for search engines. There is a premium as well as free version of plugin available. It’s certainly Out-of-the-box.

#6 CommentLuv

CommentLuv is an excellent back link generating tool. It fetches the last post from the user’s blog and posts it in the comments you make. This will let you drive traffic and generate wonderful back links. There is a premium as well as free version of plugin available.

#7 nRelate Related Content

nRelate adds the related content of the article and displays it on every post of the blog. We can customize the way it appears and do a lot with that. By my experience, nRelate is far better than many other plugins.

#8 Scrolling Social Bar

This one is a clean plugin for social media sharing. It adds a scrolling bar with social buttons like +1, Facebook Like, Tweet, LinkedIn share and StumbleUpon submit. We can change the margins, borders etc and customize it as we like.

#9 W3 Total Cache

This plugin is essential in reducing unwanted use of bandwidth. This plugin is the best caching plugin than the others. It lets us to minimize the size of scripts, cache database queries and more.

#10 Author hReview

This plugin helps users who write reviews of products. It adds a rich snippets box in the post in the beginning and also at the end of the post with star ratings (1-5 stars). In search, these ratings appear at the top of the link.

Dear readers! I hope this list will be of much use to you! Let us know what other plugins you think its must have! Share your thoughts through the comments!

Dofollow vs. Nofollow is a challenging decision for any blog owner. There really are pros and cons to each. If you allow dofollow you will attract a lot more traffic; however, the majority of traffic seems to be spam. This is what I have found on our blog. These are not even quality comments – they are comments that seem to be generated automatically without the commenter ever visiting the website. The comments are not even on topic. They do not use names, instead they use the name of their companies. When you use a nofollow blog it lowers the comments, but the comments you get are a lot higher quality. The people who are taking the time to comment have often taken the time to read your post as well and truly add to the discussion. Great post.

It is true. I reply on Akismet and Conditional CAPTCHA for WordPress to guard my website against SPAM. The Combo of these plugins works very well. So you can now change your blog to dofollow with these plugins installed. Thank you so much for this insight and comment!
