Google Navigation

It can be incredibly frustrating and time-consuming when you get lost on a long road trip. A simple mistake can cost you and your family precious hours. This is precisely why your smartphone should have the Google Maps Navigation app, an Internet-connected GPS navigation system. This GPS application allows you to simply speak your destination, instead of having to type it. You can search by address or simply input the business you would like to travel to. Google Maps Navigation provides users an idea of traffic conditions, which can be highly useful in terms of planning. If your children get hungry or need to use the bathroom, this app can search for relevant places along the way. And best of all, it’s free!

Another free app, the Weather Channel mobile app is arguably the best smartphone application to help you keep track of local weather conditions. This application features severe weather alerts, news articles, tweets and video broadcasts of meteorologists’ reports. It is absolutely critical that you monitor ever-changing weather conditions during your road trip. If there is a severe weather alert at some point during your journey, you and your family may want to stop and check in at a hotel. The Weather Channel app is the only weather-related mobile application you will ever need.

Gas Buddy Application

You’ll have to make several stops at the pump to fill up your tank during a lengthy road trip. The GasBuddy mobile app is the only tool you need to locate nearby gas stations and compare pump prices before you get there. This app can be especially useful on long road trips, if you want to save some money by locating cheaper gas stations.

I appreciate the list! My family and I go on frequent road trips, so it’s great to have apps like these to help us along the way! We’ve played the License Plate Game many times manually, so that’s awesome to see there is an app version of it now. Right now the app we use the most on our trips is DISH Remote Access. I have tons of movies and TV shows saved to my DVR at home, so with that app and the Sling Adapter my coworker at DISH got me, we’re able to watch all of those shows anywhere we get a 3G/4G or Wi-Fi connection. The kids really love watching all those shows in the car for entertainment, and I really love the quiet that goes along with it. :)
