Posted on Jan 7 2013 - 7:10pm by Christopher

The tech world excites us very often with loads of surprises. It’s the old guy with new fashion who gives the surprise this time. Ubuntu, the famous linux open source operating system for Desktops is now available for Smart Phones. It is a surprise to see a newcomer in the highly competitive mobile phone operating system market.  If the product is really good with a bit of innovation, surely it can sweep the existing ones and take the lead in the market. Ubuntu Mobile OS, as I believe has the potential to do so. I call it as a new era. Here is a preview of the new mobile OS, ”Ubuntu”.

Features of Ubuntu Mobile OS

#1. Design

The Ubuntu’s interface is designed to make the phone’s content accessible easier to the user and the apps more immersive to use. The design of the OS is made with a motto that the content/app should be accessible more easier to the user. All the content/app is designed to be accessible with a single or two swipes. Here are few examples.

  • A short swipe on the left edge shows the favourite apps
  • A full left-to-write swipe shows the screen with all active apps
  • A swipe to the right edge takes to the last app used by the user. One more right edge swipe takes to penultimate app.
  • A swipe at the bottom of the screen shows the app controls.
  • A swipe at the top edge of the screen shows the incoming messages.

Switching between the apps or multitasking is never been so easier or simpler with any other phone. Ubuntu brings you the easiest way to do.

#2. Home Screen

I feel home screen is the flagship of Ubuntu Mobile OS. In lots of ways, home screen impresses the user. It tells the user to “Come In!” rather than the lock screen. The home screen actually visualizes the complex data in a crisp, vibrant colourful form and it really impresses the users very much.

#3. Reinvented Inbox

Ubuntu reinvents the inbox. The message inbox in Ubuntu OS puts together all our texts, e-mails, social media posts in one place and lets us reply to them in a swipe. We can directly respond to the messages from Social media like Facebook, Twitter, SMS and even Phone calls.

#4. Cloud Connect with Ubuntu One

Every major Phone OS provider have developed their own cloud services. Ubuntu OS comes with Ubuntu One for cloud connection of smart phones that runs this platform. Every shot from your camera is instantly uploaded to Ubuntu One and you can access from iOS, Android or Windows Phone.

#5. Powerful Search

Ubuntu’s search is powerful and unique compared to others. Suppose you are searching for the contact details of a friend, just type the name and hit search. You can see Ubuntu searching your contacts in phone as well as from Facebook, Twitter. If it is a music, it retrieves from Amazon, Ubuntu One Music Store etc and show you.

#6. Loads of Apps!

Yep! Web apps are the trending scenarios for Smart Phones and Ubuntu OS has loads of them too. HTML 5 apps designed for applications in any platform can be adopted to Ubuntu OS with ease of effort. Their web app system is designed in such a way to run the apps with their own properties with access to system services. That means, all the major apps will be available to users right at the launch.

#7. Neatly organized

The stylishness, elegancy of Ubuntu comes not with its funkiness but in the neat arrangement. All the apps, videos are neatly organized for the easiest accessing method. See here!

Why you will like Ubuntu Mobile OS?

There are really a lot of reasons to like Ubuntu Mobile OS. There are many things in Ubuntu that will pull us towards it. Here are the reasons why you will fall in love with Ubuntu Mobile OS.

Market target by Ubuntu OS

The Ubuntu mobile OS is designed to run even on entry-level smart phones as well as high-end smart phones. Ubuntu tries to bring the entire PC environment into the small gadget. Yet I feel it succeeds in doing so. Ubuntu, fixing the targets from low to high end smart phones, it can now be a heavy competitor to many existing giants.

Hardware Support

Ubuntu OS will be supported in any phone that can run on Android. So operators do not have to change their hardware to adopt the new OS. Also, if your Smart Phone supports Android, it supports Ubuntu OS with little tweaks.
